Activated 6.60 in Drovyanaya, Chitinskaya Oblast, under the 119th Missile Brigade, and from 5.61 the 4th Missile Division.
1963 with 3 battalions at three sites:
1st Battalion - BSP-21 with 3 R-16 silos - alert duty from 3.64 (estimate)
2nd Battalion - BSP-23 with 2 R-16 pads - alert duty from 12.63 (estimate)
3rd Battalion - BSP-31 with 2 R-16 pads - alert duty from 3.64 (estimate)
In March 1964 all battalions were upgraded to regiments:
1st Battalion became 697th Missile Regiment with 3 R-16 silos (BSP-21)
2nd Battalion remained as 523rd Missile Regiment, now with 2 R-16 pads (BSP-23)
3rd Battalion became 796th Missile Regiment with 2 R-16 pads (BSP-31)
In 1968 the BSP-23 site was transferred to the 697th Missile Regiment, and the regiment was transferred to Derzhavinsk, Turgay Oblast, under the 38th Missile Division.
The regiment went on alert duty 11.11.69 with 6 R-36 (8K67) (SS-9) missiles at site BRK-7.
The regiment stood down 1979 and converted to the R-36MUTTKh (SS-18 missile) - alert duty from 1979.
The regiment stood down 1990 and converted to the R-36M2 missile - alert duty from 1990.
Disbanded 1996.
