Activated 5.52 in Kapustin Yar, Astrakhan Oblast, as the 2nd Launch Battalion of the 54th Brigade for Special Use RVGK.

3.53 renamed the 640th independent Engineer Battalion, now under the 85th Engineer Brigade RVGK.

8.58 transferred to Perevalnoye (Simferopol), Crimean Oblast, and 4.59 renamed 84th Engineer Regiment RVGK, now attached to the ShRCh (Staff of Reactive Parts).

1.7.60 renamed 84th Missile Regiment, attached to the 29th Missile Brigade, and from 5.61 the 46th Missile Division.

Organisation:

The battalions stood down in 1965.

The regiment moved to Emilchino, Turkestan 1967, and began conversion to the Temp-S (SS-12) missile - alert duty from 1968.

1969 transferred to the Army, and renamed 844th independent Missile Battalion.

US designation: Simferopol MRBM complex (Mazanka and Valki launch sites). Type I (pad) sites.
