Activated 2.52 in Kapustin Yar, Astrakhan Oblast, as the 54th Brigade for Special Use RVGK - formation complete 5.52.

3.53 renamed 85th Engineer Brigade RVGK.

Organisation 1953:

1.59 transferred to Taurage, Lithuanian SSR.

Organisation 1959:

1.7.60 renamed the 29th Guards Missile Division.

Honours and rewards were taken over from the disbanded 51st Guards Motorized Rifle Division.

1.9.61 relocated to Shaulyay, Lithuanian SSR.

Initial organisation:

29.9.62 the 637th Guards Missile Regiment was transferred to the 58th Missile Division.

115th Missile Regiment stood down 1.5.66, and was later relocated to Pervomaisk, Luhansk Oblast (46th Missile Division).

79th Guards Missile Regiment stood down 15.3.78, and was transferred to Yurya, Kirov Oblast (8th Missile Division).

Organisation 1982:

The 307th Missile Regiment stood down 24.5.82, followed by the 867th Guards Missile Regiment 7.6.82.

The last regiment, 344th Guards Missile Regiment, stood down 1.3.83.

In 12.85 the division was transferred to Irkutsk, Irkutsk Oblast, and was to have controlled 5 regiments with RSD-10 Pioner (SS-20) missiles. This never took place due to the INF treaty, and instead the first RT-2PM (SS-25) regiment became operational 27.5.88.
