Activated 1955 in Kapustin Yar, Astrakhan Oblast, as the 640th independent Engineer Battalion, under the 85th Engineer Brigade RVGK.

June 1958(?) transferred to Perevalnoye (Simferopol), Crimean Oblast, now attached to the ShRCh (Staff of Reactive Parts).

May 1959 renamed 84th Engineer Regiment.

1.7.60 renamed 84th Missile Regiment, attached to the 29th Missile Brigade, and from 5.61 the 46th Missile Division.

The regiment consisted of two battalions with each 4 R-5M (SS-3) pads.

The two battalions went on alert duty 10.5.59 (eight R-5M pads).

The battalions stood down in 1965.

The regiment moved to Emilchino, Turkestan 1967, and began conversion to the Temp-S (SS-12) missile - alert duty from 1968.

1969 transferred to the Army, and renamed 844th independent Missile Battalion.

US designation: Simferopol MRBM complex (Mazanka and Valki launch sites). Type I (pad) sites.
