Activated 1.2.70 in Plesetsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast, under the Plesetsk Test Center (53rd NIIP). Formed from half of 8th independent Engineering & Test Unit (military unit: 01349).

The unit would test mobile solid-propellant missile systems.

From 18.3.66 under the 4th Test Department, and from 16.8.83 the 6th Test Department.

Plesetsk Test Center - Launch Site BSP-5 - two pads (62 59 00N, 40 46 36E)

• Temp-2S (15P642) (SS-16) missile - 1st test flight 14.3.72 - 35 launches to 12.74

Plesetsk Test Center - Site 158 - two pads (63 00 29N, 41 33 06E)

• RT-2PM (15P158) (SS-25) missile - 1st test flight 29.9.81 - 51 launches by 12.09

• Start-1 orbital launcher - two launches (25.3.93 and 28.9.95)

• RT-2PM2 (SS-27) missile - testing began 2005
