Activated 1953 in Dmitrov, Moscow Oblast - initially as the 1947th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment for Special Use and from 1955 as the 644th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment for Special Use.

1953 to 1983 equipped with 60 S-25 (SA-1) launchers:

• Launch area: 56 29 22N, 37 28 21E (US designation: Moscow SAM site E36-1)
• Support area: 56 28 44N, 37 30 12E
• Guidance area: 56 28 07N, 37 28 41E

In 1967 a S-125 (SA-3) battalion was added to the regiment - 56 29 01N, 37 26 39E (Moscow SAM site E36-3)

1983 converted to the S-300PT (SA-10), and was reduced to an independent Anti-Aircraft Missile Battalion of the 658th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment.
