Activated mid-1967 in Karshi-Khanabad, Kashkadar'inskaya Oblast, as the 64th independent Tactical Reconnaissance Aviation Squadron, from the 2nd AE of the 313th independent Reconnaissance Aviation Regiment.
Early 1976 renamed 87th independent Reconnaissance Aviation Regiment with two squadrons:
1st AE from the 64th independent Tactical Reconnaissance Aviation Squadron with MiG-21R
2nd AE from the 40th independent Reconnaissance Aviation Squadron at Chirchik, Tashkent Oblast, with Il-28R (had been activated 1970 in Poltava, Poltava Oblast)
Twice a squadron was deployed to Afghanistan (1.80 to 4.80 at Kabul [34 33 56N, 69 12 49E] with Yak-28R and MiG-21R, and 3.84 to 5.85 at Bagram [34 56 46N, 69 15 45E] with Su-17M3R). The second time (3.84-5.85), the squadron was known as the 263rd independent Tactical Reconnaissance Aviation Squadron.
