Activated 1960 in Polyarnyy, Murmansk Oblast, as the 803rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment.

Intially with 4 S-75 (SA-2) battalions.

1967 took over two S-125 (SA-3) battalions from the 000 Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment, while four new S-125 battalions were activated.

Organisation 1960's:

1968 renamed 42nd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade.

In 1968 an independent Anti-Aircraft Missile Group with 2 launch S-200 (SA-5) battalions were added to the brigade (US designation: SAM site B03-5):

1968 with 2 S-200 (SA-5), 4 S-75 (SA-2) and 6 S-125 (SA-3) battalions.

Began conversion to the S-300PS (SA-10) missile in 1984/1985 - the first battalion operational in September 1985:

1990 renamed 161st Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment.

1991 with 2 S-200D (SA-5), 4 S-300PS (SA-10) and 4 S-125 battalions.

1993 took over the S-200V (SA-5) missiles from the 854th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment.

The two S-200 (SA-5) battalions were deactivated in 1997.

5.98 united with the 531st Guards Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment, and renamed 531st Guards Nevelsko-Berlinskiy order of Lenin Red Banner orders of Suvorov, Kutuzov and Bogdan Khmelnitskiy Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment.

2009 with 5 S-300PM (SA-20) battalions.
