Activated 18.11.54 in Novocherkassk, Rostov Oblast, as the 18th Guards Heavy Tank Division, from the 5th Guards Cavalry Division.

Organisation 1955:

5.3.62 converted to a regular tank division, and renamed 18th Guards Tank Division.

Organisation 1962:

11.1.65 renamed 5th Guards Tank Division.

In 11.67 the 349th Tank Regiment was renamed 108th Tank Regiment.

22.2.68 awarded the Red Banner.

In 1968 the 156th independent Guards Sapper Battalion was renamed 156th independent Guards Engineer-Sapper Battalion.

Organisation 1970:

In 1972 the 000 independent Chemical Defence Company was renamed 577th independent Chemical Defence Battalion.

In 1980 the 000 independent Motor Transport Battalion was renamed 151st independent Material Supply Battalion.

In 1.6.82 the 559th independent Missile Battalion was disbanded.

In 5.88 the 373rd independent Helicopter Regiment, 000 independent Airfield Technical Support Battalion and 0000 independent Communication and Radio-Technical Support Company was detached from the corps.

1.6.89 reduced, and renamed 5th Guards Tank Division.

1.6.2009 renamed 37th independent Guards Motorised Rifle Regiment.



Divisional coordinates:

The division was maintained as a Ready Division - Reduced Strength II (US terms: Category II), and from 1982 the corps was maintained as a Ready Corps - First Line (US terms: Category I) - manning was about 90%.
