Activated 2.59 in Znamenskiy Pereulok 19, Moscow, but traces its origin to the Special Department of the General Staff, which was activated 4.9.47 from Design-Bureau 11 (KB-11), and later became the 6th Directorate of the Ministry of Defense.

From 17.12.59 the 12th Main Directorate was attached to the Strategic Rocket Forces (RVSN), but in 11.74 it reverted to Ministry of Defense control.

The Directorates main duties relates to the nuclear arsenal of the USSR, and includes:

• storage and safekeeping

• technical maintenance

• transportation

• delivery and issuance

• disposal

• nuclear testing

The Directorate controls a number of units:

• Nuclear Registry - registry where all warheads are registrered

• Object "S" - nuclear warhead storage bases

• Repair-Technical Base - nuclear warhead units operating together with the end-users

• Semipalatinsk and Novaya Zemlya test sites

• nuclear weapons research institutes
