Activated 1959 in Tosno-2, Leningrad Oblast, as the 86th Air Defence Brigade of Special Use (3rd System-100 Brigade).

Operational from 5.60, and 8.60 renamed 86th Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade.

Initially equipped with 8 S-75 (SA-2) battalions - from 1964 an additional six S-125 (SA-3) battalions were activated (including mobilisation battalions).

Organisation 1960's:

5.10.67 inherited the Red Banner from the old 961st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment.

From 1990 began conversion to the S-300PS (SA-10) missile:

15.2.93 inherited the honors and awards from the 169th Guards Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment, and was renamed 86th Guards Kievsko-Lodzinskaya Red Banner orders of Kutuzov and Bogdan Khmelnitskiy Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade imeni 50th anniversary SSSR.

1994 renamed 1490th Guards Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment.
