616-й отдельный береговой ракетный полк

Military Unit: 00000

Activated 5.9.57 on Kildin Island to control Object 101.

In 1955 construction of Object 101 began on Kildin Island - four fixed twin launchers for the S-2 Strela (SSC-2 Salish) missile, with the first missile arriving in march 1957.

The launchers became operational 6.1.58 in two battalions (Kildin-East and Kildin-West).

In 1965 took over the 526th independent Coastal Artillery Battalion, also stationed on Kildin Island.

In 1971 began a slow conversion to the P-35B (4K44) Utes (SSC-1 Sepal) missile, with the first battalion becoming operational in 1976. The 2nd battalion became operational in 1982, having been re-equipped with the 3M44 Progress (SSC-1 Sepal) instead.

In the autumn of 1991 conducted the last test missile firing, before an overhaul of the complexes began in 1992 - this was never completed.
