Activated 17.5.57 in Hillersleben, East Germany, as the 26th Guards Tank Division, from the 19th Guards Mechanised Division.

In 1960 the 64th independent Tank Training Battalion was disbanded.

In 1961 the 664th independent Missile Battalion was activated.

19.2.62 the 65th independent Equipment Maintenance and Recovery Battalion was activated.

11.1.65 renamed 47th Guards Tank Division.

In 1965 the 49th Guards Tank Regiment was renamed 197th Guards Tank Regiment.

In 1968 the 52nd independent Guards Sapper Battalion was renamed 52nd independent Guards Engineer-Sapper Battalion.

Organisation 1970:

In 1972 the 000 independent Chemical Defence Company was renamed 000 independent Chemical Defence Battalion.

In 1980 the 730th independent Motor Transport Battalion was renamed 1077th independent Material Supply Battalion, and the independent Reactive Artillery Battery was absorbed by the Artillery Regiment.

Organisation 1980:

In 1985 the 000 independent Chemical Defence Battalion was renamed 332nd independent Chemical Defence Company.

In 9.87 the 664th independent Missile Battalion was transferred to the 442nd Missile Brigade.

Organisation 1988:

In 6.89 the 1069th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment was transferred to the 17th Guards Tank Division, and was replaced by the 1009th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment (Hillersleben, East Germany), from the 32nd Guards Tank Division.

In 6.90 the 112th independent Reconnaissance Battalion was transferred to the 10th Guards Division, and was replaced by the 7th independent Guards Reconnaissance Battalion (Burg, East Germany), from the same division.

Disbanded 3.97, and partly absorbed by the 3rd Motorised Rifle Division.
