Activated 25.6.57 in Omsk (Svetlyy), Omsk Oblast, as the 67th Motorised Rifle Division, from the 67th Mechanised Division.

1.7.59 the 445th Motorised Rifle Regiment and 113th Artillery Regiment was disbanded, and was replaced by the 309th Guards Motorised Rifle Regiment and 246th Guards Artillery Regiment, both from the disbanded 109th Guards Motorised Rifle Division.

24.5.62 renamed 67th Training Motorised Rifle Division.

11.1.65 renamed 56th Training Motorised Rifle Division.

27.3.67 awarded the name "Leningrad".

In 1968 the 278th independent Training Sapper Battalion was renamed 278th independent Training Engineer-Sapper Battalion.

In 11.72 the 0000 independent Training Anti-Tank Artillery Battalion was activated.
