Activated 29.5.57 in Bolgrad, Moldavian SSR, as the 118th Motorised Rifle Division, from the 69th Mechanised Division.

17.11.64 renamed 48th Motorised Rifle Division.

In 1968 the 118th independent Sapper Battalion was renamed 118th independent Engineer-Sapper Battalion.

In 8.68 the 341st Motorised Rifle Regiment was transferred to the 86th Guards Motorised Rifle Division, and was replaced by the 265th Guards Motorised Rifle Regiment, from the same division.

In 10.68 the 55th independent Tank Battalion was activated.

In 1969 the 258th independent Anti-Tank Artillery Battalion was activated.

Organisation 1970:

In 1972 the 308th independent Chemical Defence Company was renamed 000 independent Chemical Defence Battalion.

In 1980 the 125th independent Motor Transport Battalion was renamed 909th independent Material Supply Battalion, and the 266th independent Reactive Artillery Battery was absorbed by the Artillery Regiment.

Organisation 1980:

26.4.85 awarded the order of the October Revolution.

In 1987 the 000 independent Chemical Defence Battalion was renamed 348th independent Chemical Defence Company.

In 9.87 the 440th independent Missile Battalion was absorbed by the new 442nd Missile Brigade.

Organisation 1988:

In 7.89 the 210th Motorised Rifle Regiment was transferred to the 18th Guards Motorised Rifle Division, and was replaced by the 322nd Motorised Rifle Regiment from the 31st Tank Division.

In 6.90 the 333rd Motorised Rifle Regiment and the 716th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment was transferred to Volgograd, Volgograd Oblast, while the 375th Tank Regiment was renamed 1335th Motorised Rifle Regiment.

10.6.90 transferred to the KGB, and renamed 48th Motorised Rifle Division KGB SSSR.

From 7.90 to 8.91 the 255th Guards Motorised Rifle Regiment was part of the division.

11.9.91 transferred back to the Army, and renamed 48th Motorised Rifle Division.

12.1.92 taken over by Ukraine.
